The iNet Network Scanner

iNet shows all running devices currently connected as well as recently connected devices. You can identify their MAC and IP addresses as well as if they are online or not. All running services in your network are displayed in realtime via the Bonjour Browser.

Topics covered on this page:

To display the iNet scanner tool:

  • Click on the network scanner tool icon at the left side of the iNet window.

    Bonjour Domain Chooser

To initiate a scan:

  • Click on the 'Network Scan' button in the tool bar.

    Bonjour Domain Chooser

To remove a device from the device list:

  • Right-Click on the device name and choose 'Delete Host'.

    Bonjour Domain Chooser
  • The deleted device will show up in the device list again after a new scan is performed while this device is running and connected to the scanned network.

  • If you delete a device from the history list it will not be shown until you perform a new scan while this device is running. This way you can permanently remove devices that are not longer part of your network from the history view. The count of hosts in the history list updates and reflects the new state.

To connect to a device from the device list:

  • Right-Click on the device name and choose 'Connect via...:'. You will see a list of protocols to connect.

    Bonjour Domain Chooser
  • Some of the protocols are signed with a small green bulb. This means that iNet has detected that this device will respond to the particular protocol.

  • No green bulb does not always mean that this device will not respond to the particular protocol, it just means that iNet could not detect if the device will respond or not.

  • Other ways to connect are using the 'connect' button or by clicking on an item in the list of open ports.

  • You can also connect via the Bonjour browser if you choose a service type that can handle connections. If an appropriate service is available, at the bottom right of the window an editable field will be visible:

    Bonjour Domain Chooser

To see which devices have been part of the network before - the history

  • In the network scan view switch the chooser to the clock icon:

    Bonjour Domain Chooser
  • All devices that are currently connected and running as well as recently scanned devices in this network are shown in the list. The currently not running/connected devices are shown pale.

  • If you delete a device from the history list it will not be shown until you perform a new scan while this device is running. This way you can permanently remove devices that are not longer part of your network from the history view. The count of hosts in the history list updates and reflects the new state.

  • To see only the currently running and connected devices, switch the chooser back:

    Bonjour Domain Chooser

Setting the scan range and the interface to scan:

  • Click on the 'Settings' icon in the tool bar.

  • Choose the interface you want to use and adjust the scan range to your needs. If you enter a custom IP range, this will be stored and used until you close iNet. On restart of iNet the standard range (automatically calculated from your network settings) will be restored.

  • Close the scan range settings window by using the 'Scan' button. The scan will start immediately.

Assign icons and change device names:

  • Click on the device name or device icon in the main window of the network scanner.

  • The icon chooser shows up with the current settings for icon and name.

  • Choose an icon from one of the available icon sets. Edit the name of the device.

  • Store your changes by clicking on the 'Confirm' button. The new name and icon is shown in the device list and the device detail view.

  • Changed names and icons are stored for the MAC addresses of the devices. If you perform a new scan your changes will be restored and displayed.

  • If you delete the scan cache (via preferences) all your changes will be reset to standard values.

How to add your own icons

  • Drag your icons over the big device icon in the device detail view.

Add Own Icons To The Icon Chooser
  • Your icons are automatically added to the 'own icons' section of the icon chooser.

Portscan and Bonjour services per device

  • If a selected device is announcing Bonjour services, these services are shown in the Services field in the device detail view.

  • Clicking on a service in the list shows detailed information about this service.

  • To perform a basic portscan choose the ports tab and click on the 'Scan for open ports' button. This will perform a portscan on the selected device for the 65 mostly used ports on all platforms.

  • Clicking on a found port in the list opens a connection to this port (if possible). If a green mark is shown in beneath the list item iNet has detected that you can connect via this port. No green mark does not mean that the port is not reachable, it just says that iNet could not decide if a connection is possible with your Mac.
